The Necessity of Becoming a Competent Performer

Learning to sing or to play an instrument well is a fundamental goal of studying music at the college level.  While not everyone who studies music plans to become a professional performing artist, a nominal level of professional competence is essential to becoming a respected musician.  All music students participate in ensembles of one sort or another. Here at Howard, you will find many different opportunities to acquaint yourself with various performance styles and requirements, from Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra to Jazz Ensemble and HU Unplugged.

All of our students perform regularly throughout the academic year, either as soloists in recital or as members of a larger ensemble.  Refer to the Performance and Event Calendar for a complete list of all events with detailed information regarding time and venue.
